    Title:
How cost effective are mid-market solutions - really????
    Blog Post:

After a request to do some research and write an article about how much deploying dashboard solutions cost on average, I realized that it would be interesting to expand this idea and look into the cost of targeted mid-market solutions as well. Certain vendors offer lower cost solutions with a subset of features and functionality in comparison with their enterprise versions, while other vendors target smaller enterprises and offer solutions at a low cost. Either way, understanding how additional costs such as training and support, or recurring subscription fees or licensing affect long term costs can help organizations make better decisions when looking at costs vs. benefits of deploying these solutions.

Currently, I am in the midst of collecting this data.  It would be great to get input from organizations related to how cost affected their decision to implement BI as well as additional costs that were not initially expected. Overall, I think it's interesting to compare the value vendors place on lower cost solutions and whether their customers agree that price on its own is enough of a benefit or incentive when looking to implement BI.

It looks to me like an organization could use MS presentation foundation and related tools to build dashboards at virtually no cost.  Have you considered this option?

So, this presents one option...what about for companies without IT resources or limited know-how?

Certainly nothing is free but if there is a solution that runs on existing hardware, has almost no software cost and the human resource requirement is modest, that will probably be the least cost option.

I definitely agree, but for some reason I keep encountering organizations (small and mid-sized specifically) that wouldn't even know where to start and require an overall awareness of what is available.  For companies that understand what they have in-house and what they want from BI, then it is definitely a viable option.

I hear from a lot of business users that want dashboards but do not want to add to the IT burden or incur added cost for internal IT services.  In other words (IMHO), they do not have the patience to wait for a solution from IT or they see the implementation time as impeding the immediate business value.

Small/Mid-Market solutions work well for departmental implementations because they can often be completed with discretionary budget and can often have a much faster return on investment.  Time to value is something the business seem more apt to sell to management than many IT counterparts.  Some of the larger BI firms have sales organizations that cannot adapt to the small/mid-size organizations - they just move to slow.

For the record, I have 20 years in IT so I see both sides of the argument here.  I realize my comments are not directly about dollars and cents but hopefully you find the content relevant.
