    Title:
    Netezza's Resurgence
    Blog Post:

I spent Wednesday night this week hanging out at the Red Circle in San Diego to help celebrate the product launch for Netezza. And it was clear from the beginning that the they have re-found their mojo. The company has been pretty quite the last few months as it made final tweaks to a new line of solutions and a new go to market message and strategy.

The new TwinFin appliance is the first of four new offerings Netezza is deliverying to the market. The company now offers their solution on commodity hardware allowing more flexibility to the end user and a lower price point that is only 20K per Terabyte while still providing powerful speed via their software and FPGA (field programmable gate array) microprocessors.

They are also offering a entry level machine that will help them push down market to SMB style companies that are seeking new database and analytic solutions.

I really like what I am hearing from them and its clear the team is on the same track. It was great catching up with Phil Francisco and Tim Young and my good frind Virginia Lux.

Thanks for the invite we enjoyed the party.

  • IBM to buy SPSS for 1.2 Billion

    Title:
IBM to buy SPSS for 1.2 Billion
    Blog Post:

My first thought on this topic was WOW!! Followed by thoughts of congratulations to Jack Noonan and his executive team. The proposed purchase seems to make solid sense for IBM who will benefit from folding SPSS Clementine technology into their product offering. I couldn't help but wonder what it means for SAS an IBM partner in the same line of work. SAS is the leader in the predictive analytics market and I can't help but wonder if they might have approached SAS first? I have heard other industry pundits mention that Dr. Goodnight CEO of SAS is becoming more and more open to the idea of selling the company but that he continues to seek higher than average multipliers on the deal. SAS revenue is over 2 Billion so I'd guess they would have cost IBM a much much higher amount then they paid for SPSS.

With IBM's recent announcements around analytics its becoming clear they plan to compete at a high level. Forrester Research analyst James Kobielus had this to say. “For IBM’s competitive standing in the data management market, this acquisition represents one of the last missing pieces of its [IOD] portfolio,”.

    Title:
GoldenGate and Greenplum deliver Real-time data feeds to the DW
    Blog Post:

It seems to me to be a partnership made in heaven. The new frontier of data warehouse and analytic appliances are in need of a feed. As companies like Greenplum offer new alternatives to clients it makes sense that the demand for real-time won't be far behind. GoldenGate has become the go to company for this type of feature set. They are popping up in all type of real-time circumstances and have positioned themselves as a leader in the space.

Ultimately every company in the appliance space will be looking to provide faster batch and stream feed data to the solutions they are providing their clients. The success stories in this sector are fun to read with monster queries that took days dropping to minutes this equates to fantastic ROI for the end users pushing the technology forward. GoldenGate's focus on real-time data integration has put them into over 500+ enterprise companies worldwide.

I've included the press release below.

GoldenGate’s Real-Time Data Integration Solution and Greenplum’s Data Warehouse Enable Lower Cost, High-Performance Business Intelligence Solution

San Francisco, CA – April 7, 2009 - GoldenGate Software Inc., a leading provider of high availability and real-time data integration solutions, and Greenplum a leading provider of database software for the next generation of data warehousing and analytics, today announced that the GoldenGate® solution supports integration of operational data to a Greenplum data warehouse in real-time for improved business intelligence and reporting. By using technology solutions from GoldenGate, customers now have a high-performance, efficient way to load data from a variety of operational source systems for an up-to-date, accurate picture of the business.

Business intelligence projects are being pushed higher up on a CIO’s priority list due to the increased desire to optimize business operations, particularly in areas such as pricing or profitability analysis, in addition to enabling cross-selling, up-selling, and other customer focused marketing initiatives. In order to meet these requirements across many industry sectors, organizations are looking for ways to deploy data warehouses and BI systems faster and more cost effectively. Customers with vast amounts of data spread across a number of heterogeneous enterprise applications need a data integration solution that can keep up with the most demanding online transaction processing (OLTP) environments. GoldenGate and Greenplum now provide a best-of-breed solution to address that market need.

“GoldenGate’s real-time data integration solution allows Greenplum customers to achieve low cost, high performance business intelligence systems,” said Tim Rathbun, executive vice president, GoldenGate Software.  “GoldenGate continues to support the widest range of database, hardware and operating systems environments today that are reflective of the large enterprise customers we support.  The Greenplum Database is now an additional environment that GoldenGate supports and we look forward to increased demand in the marketplace and helping customers achieve improved business intelligence.”

“Greenplum customers all share one thing in common: the need to manage large volumes of data efficiently and provide the business with low cost, high performance reporting and query capabilities,” said Frank Bien, vice president of business development, Greenplum. “By leveraging GoldenGate’s non-intrusive and high performance data acquisition technology with Greenplum’s in-database transformation capabilities, customers greatly reduce the cost and complexity of deploying business intelligence systems.”

Joint GoldenGate and Greenplum customers will see improved “time to value” on complex data warehouse projects through rapid implementation and integration with operational source systems underpinning critical business applications. By using the GoldenGate® Real-Time Data Integration Solution, customers will have a high performance, efficient way to load data from a variety of operational source systems. In addition, by pulling from multiple domains, business users will also have an up-to-date, accurate picture about what is going on in the business.

  • Sun and IBM deal is evolving quick

Sun and IBM deal is evolving quick
    Blog Post:

The latest rumor is that IBM has lowered its initail offer price but the deal is still on. I wonder if that had anything to do with the due dilligence around the Sun product? Overall I really like Sun technology but the go to market execution is weak at best. They have a treasure box full of cool solutions but seems unable to execute in the market. The good news is that Sun is surrounded by strong partners who have done an excellent job adding value to Sun products.
